Father Baker was shocked at his first assignment from the Bishop – he was appointed assistant superintendent of the institutions at Limestone Hill under his friend Father Hines. Father David LiPuma says Baker , as part of New York’s 74th Infantry Regiment, was sent off almost immediately, to Gettysburg. A Hero Until the End His “City” expanding quickly, Father Baker ’s body began to slow down, but the humble priest still had a few things left on his “to do” list! One of them – his biggest dream yet – had been in his mind since his pilgrimage to Europe when he was in the seminary. In thanksgiving to his patroness for all her help, Father Baker built OLV National Shrine & Basilica, which was consecrated and named a minor basilica in 1926.
